PhD Research Explores Cinema, Loneliness and Life in the Digital Age
The TU RISE IADT Elevate Programme is pleased to celebrate the publication of an article by PhD candidate Eilís N. in the Irish Screen Studies Journal special issue, Cinema and Loneliness.
The article examines Inside (2021), Bo Burnham’s experimental musical comedy created during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on interdisciplinary and metanarrative approaches, Eilís explores how Burnham’s portrayal of isolation operates as a form of social commentary, reflecting on loneliness, pandemic life and our growing dependence on digital spaces.
The publication contributes to wider discussions around screen media, performance and contemporary experiences of social isolation, while considering how cinema and other forms of screen culture can reflect and interrogate periods of collective crisis.
The publication represents an important contribution to ongoing conversations within screen studies and highlights the value of research that examines contemporary cultural experiences through interdisciplinary perspectives.
Eilís expressed her gratitude to the editors and reviewers for their thoughtful engagement with the research and her honour at being included in this timely and thought-provoking special issue.
The TU RISE IADT Elevate Programme is proud to support emerging researchers and celebrate their contributions to academic and creative research. Find out more here.
